What is a domain name?
A domain name is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a name - a reference. Nothing more, nothing less.
It's a bit like registering a trademark. The trademark has a registered owner. By looking up the trademark at the patent office you can find out the address of the company who owns it. In the same way, computers interrogate the DNS (Domain Name System) to determine the Internet (IP) Addresses associated with the domain.

If you'd like to add a new domain, on which you'd like to run a new website you'll need to add it as an Domain within the "Domains" option.
Addon domains count towards your number of unique websites. Addon domains can have their own unique email accounts.

In the past, many domain registrars have offered a domain privacy add-on service when purchasing domains. This service redacts from public WHOIS lookups all private contact data.
Since the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came in to force in 2018 this data is now redacted by default - which for the most part makes any domain privacy service redundant.

If you would no longer like your personal information hidden from WHOIS queries, you may opt-in to showing your personal information (there is however no benefit to doing so as this may lead to you having spam/advertisement calls/emails).

The first step to moving your domain names to Krystal is to create an order with us. Transferring a .uk domain name is free of charge and you will not be charged again until you are next due to renew the domain.

Custom nameservers allow you to use your domain name in the nameserver name - e.g. if your domain is example.co.uk you would be able to use ns1.example.co.uk and ns2.example.co.uk

Add a domain to an existing site (Alias)
There are a number of ways to add a new domain or site to your account. We have a separate guide that details the differences.
If you'd like to add a new domain - but just have it display the same content as an existing website you'll need to add it as an Alias domain.

DNS provides a way to map a server name to an IP address e.g. www.krystal.uk = 77.72.0.35
It also provides, via Reverse DNS (RDNS), a way to do the reverse check, from an IP address to a server name via PTR records.
This can be particularly important if you are running an email server. Remote mail servers will often perform an RDNS lookup to ensure that the IP address the request came from matches the domain name of the incoming email. On January 1st 2014 ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) changed the RAA (Registrar Accreditation Agreement). The revised RAA has vastly tightened up the responsibilities of domain registrars and registrants alike in a bid to rid the internet of orphaned and lost domains (i.e. domain's for which the registrant's contact information is not available or invalid). This also helps avoid disputes over ownership.

When a domain is registered you are required to supply contact information. For .uk domains there is just a primary contact. For most other domains there are four - Owner, Admin, Billing and Technical.
It's really important that you keep your domains contact details up to date to avoid losing your domain - if you can't be contacted at domain renewal time your domain may expire and you may lose it.

At Krystal, we take security very seriously. This means we do not allow remotely hosted domains to simply be added to cPanel, as this would allow you to add any domain name, regardless of where it's actually registered. This can open up many options for abuse, including intercepting mail or spoofing email addresses.
